Destination Guide: Argentina

Our Argentina itinerary was magical because it combined the vibrant energy of Buenos Aires with the serenity of Patagonia. In Buenos Aires, we were immersed in the city’s rich history, lively culture, and authentic experiences—we shopped for vintage finds in San Telmo with a knowledgable guide, enjoyed incredible food and wine, and cheered on River Plate as they played the Boca Juniors at Estadio Mâs Monumental. While in Patagonia we enjoyed a peaceful escape, sipping wine after a rewarding hike up to Laguna de los Tres, white water rafting through pristine rivers, and ice trekking on the iconic Perito Moreno Glacier. This mix of cultural richness and natural beauty created a truly unforgettable journey.

Why Argentina?

Argentina offers the perfect blend of cultural richness and natural beauty. Travelers can enjoy the shopping, fine dining, and culture of Buenos Aires, then retreat to Patagonia for the serenity and adventure provided by the breathtaking landscape.

Getting There.

Buenos Aires is a vibrant international city and as such there are daily flights in and out of Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) from all major hubs. The frequency might vary slightly depending on the airline and the season, but generally, there are plenty of options to choose from! I recommend spending a few days in Buenos Aires to enjoy amazing dinners, shopping and tango shows before heading to Patagonia on a 3-hour domestic flight.

Once you arrive at El Calafate International Airport, the iconic Los Glaciares National Park in El Chaltén is an easy, 3-hour drive away.

Teresa’s Favorite Things.

El Chalten:
Deep in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park, El Chalten is known for its stunning views of Mt Fitz Roy. El Chalten is arguably one of Argentina's most sought after destinations, and this charming village offers some of the most breathtaking hiking trails in the world. The trek to Laguna de los Tres is an absolute must for any visitor. The trail takes you through lush forests, across glistening rivers, and up to the base of the iconic Fitz Roy mountain. The view at the top is nothing short of spectacular – a turquoise glacial lake framed by the majestic peaks of the Andes.

A day of white water rafting is a great alternative to a second day of hiking. We were able to wind our way through glacial landscapes and dramatic mountain ranges, viewing the park from an entirely different vantage point than the day before (and thankfully using different muscles).

Favorite Experience: White Water Rafting at Los Glaciares National Park

El Calafate:
Named for the small Calafate berry native to the region, El Calafate is the gateway to the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. This small Patagonian town offers stunning views, with endless options boasting incredible local cuisine and wine pairings. Witnessing the sheer size of the Perito Moreno Glacier is an experience like no other. Opt for a guided tour that includes a boat ride up to the towering ice walls, and, if you're feeling adventurous, a trek on the glacier itself. Legend has it that anyone who eats the Calafate berry is destined to return to Patagonia one day!

Favorite Experience: Drinking Whiskey Made with Glacier Ice!

Buenos Aires:
Buenos Aires, the vibrant capital of Argentina, is a city that combines both culture and passion. From its European architecture to its lively tango shows, Buenos Aires captivates visitors with its unique blend of old-world charm and modern flair. Food, culture, shopping, Buenos Aires has it all!

Favorite Experience: The Rojo Tango at the Faena and a River Plate Futbol Match at Estadio Mâs Monumental.

Can’t Miss.

The Rojo Tango at the Faena, Italian food at Maffia Trattoria, Wine Boutique Soho (a great wine shop in Palermo Soho), a food tour and shopping at the San Telmo Market, and eating all the asado at almost any traditional Argentine parilla!
