Mexico City provides plenty of reasons to linger: incredible meals, independent design, extraordinary art, and neighborhoods with personalities all their own.
Here’s our MavenLuxe guide to choosing your home base, planning your days, and finding a few favorites along the way.
01 | Roma Norte or Polanco? Start with your neighborhood.
In Mexico City, the first question is often which neighborhood to choose. Your home base helps shape everything from your morning coffee and dinner plans to the way each day unfolds. Roma Norte and Polanco are both wonderful neighborhoods, with distinctly different rhythms.
Roma Norte: creative energy and walkable discoveries
Roma Norte draws you in with tree-lined streets, Art Nouveau and Art Deco facades, independent boutiques, and cafes. There’s a youthful, design-conscious energy here, with plenty to discover between your planned stops.
It’s an appealing base for first-time visitors who want to explore on foot, food lovers building their days around meals, and couples who enjoy a bakery morning followed by shopping and dinner nearby.
El Cortés
Our retreat home base, El Cortés, is a restored 15-room mansion with the feel of a private residence. Its historic character makes it a natural fit for the neighborhood, while Lotti downstairs pairs Swiss and other European classics with Mexican ingredients.
We’ll help you choose your room with the same care as your hotel. Layout, outdoor space, and placement vary, and the corner balcony room was a team favorite.
Best for: First-time explorers, food lovers, design enthusiasts, and travelers who want to feel immersed in the neighborhood.
Polanco: polished surroundings and a calmer pace
Polanco has a more refined rhythm, with leafy residential streets, luxury shopping, and upscale dining. Much of our exploring centered on Parque Lincoln, a welcoming place to stroll between restaurants and shops.
It suits travelers who appreciate a calmer home base, dedicated shoppers and diners, and returning visitors looking for a different side of the city. Families may also find it appealing, with the right hotel and room arrangements.
Casa Polanco
Casa Polanco is an intimate, art-filled hotel overlooking Parque Lincoln. Thoughtful touches include its “Eye Opener” coffee and tea service, delivered to your room; however, the staff made the strongest impression.
When a canceled flight unexpectedly extended the trip for four of us, our contacts arranged rooms and welcomed us with warmth and care. Experiencing that hospitality firsthand gave us another reason to recommend it.
Best for: Travelers seeking refinement and quiet, dedicated diners and shoppers, returning visitors, and families who enjoy a relaxed base.
02 | Where to eat in Mexico City
Some meals deserve a reservation and an evening of their own. Others fit naturally between shops, galleries, and sightseeing.
Roma Norte
Lotti – for breakfast or an intimate dinner
Tucked inside El Cortés, Lotti pairs European classics with Mexican ingredients. Its carved-wood bar and terrace make it a lovely option for a relaxed meal in the neighborhood. For breakfast, we highly recommend the egg salad croissant.
Pair it with: A stay at El Cortés or an afternoon exploring Roma Norte
Blanco Colima – for dinner with friends
A seasonal menu and striking historic interiors make Blanco Colima the perfect choice when atmosphere is a priority. Ornate architectural details and modern accents create a memorable setting for the start of an evening out.
Best for: A lively dinner with friends, a meal before a night out
Contramar – for a long seafood lunch
Contramar is a classic for a reason. Make this your opportunity to enjoy sobremesa: staying at the table for conversation long after the meal itself has ended. Tuna tostadas and the signature Contramar-style fish are options to consider when ordering.
Planning note: Reserve a Friday lunch around 3 p.m., then leave the rest of the afternoon unhurried.
Máximo – for a special dinner
Inventive cooking and a contemporary setting make Máximo a restaurant to build an evening around. Put it on your short list if dining is one of the main reasons for your trip.
Go for: An occasion-worthy dinner
Panadería Brûlée – for a leisurely bakery stop
A team favorite for a slow start to the day. Pick a few pastries to share and give yourself time to enjoy them before exploring the neighborhood.
Go for: A relaxed bakery breakfast or a sweet afternoon snack
Panadería Rosetta – for breads and pastries
Another team favorite, Rosetta makes an inviting first stop before wandering Roma Norte’s tree-lined streets.
Planning note: Arrive at opening or allow time for a wait.
Loup Bar – for wine and small plates
On Tonalá in Roma Norte, Loup Bar puts wine at the center of the experience, with small plates to accompany your glass. Its kitchen emphasizes fresh, organic ingredients, sourced locally where possible.
Best for: a glass before dinner or a wine-focused evening with food to share
Polanco
La Bonvi – for tacos in a lively setting
One of our standout meals, La Bonvi combines handmade tortillas, high-quality cuts, and a bustling atmosphere.
Order: The picaña cachetada and tuna tostada
Entremar – for a seafood lunch
Entremar brings seafood into the Polanco dining shortlist, with a bright setting and views toward Plaza Uruguay. Consider it when you want a leisurely meal during a day in the neighborhood.
Go for: A seafood lunch with time to linger
Ticuchi – for cocktails and vegetable-focused dishes
This dimly lit setting makes it an appealing choice for an evening centered on cocktails and good food. Agave is the focus, with a long list of tequila and mezcal to choose from.
Best for: Couples seeking a lively evening of cocktails and food to share
Monarch Haus – for specialty coffee
For travelers who enjoy specialty coffee, Monarch Haus adds a dedicated coffee-and-bakery stop to a day in Polanco.
Best for: An early morning coffee while exploring Polanco
Pujol – for modern Mexican fine dining
For travelers who want Mexico City’s best-known restaurant, Pujol offers a seasonal tasting menu and a separate taco omakase counter.
Best for: A once-in-a-trip dinner in Polanco
Centro Histórico
Taquería Los Cocuyos – for tacos between landmarks
This Michelin-recognized taquería was a favorite stop on our private tour with Luis. Known for its slowly cooked meats and classic tacos, it fits naturally into a day exploring Centro Histórico.
Order: The cactus quesadilla… you won’t regret it
03 | Where to shop
Our visit to Xinú was much more than a quick shopping stop. A long display table introduced us to dried botanicals and the inspiration behind the scents, with staff guiding us through the fragrances.
Make this shopping complex part of a neighborhood stroll. It’s an inviting place to browse between Parque Lincoln, lunch, and the surrounding shops.
Fashion, accessories, and design discoveries make IKAL a useful stop for travelers who enjoy browsing beyond familiar luxury brands. Locations in Roma Norte and Polanco.
A thoughtful choice for textiles, tabletop pieces, and home objects. Its focus on craft offers a way to bring something distinctive into your everyday surroundings.
Build Antara into your plans for a broader shopping outing. Treat it as its own stop rather than assuming every Polanco recommendation sits within the same short walk.
180º Shop
A concept store carrying independent local and international designer clothing, footwear, and lifestyle goods.Handmade embroidered clothing and jewelry from designers across Mexico and Colombia. Amor & Rosas combines contemporary clothing designs with traditional Mexican hand embroidery.
04 | Art, culture, and experiences
Explore Centro Histórico with a private guide
Our afternoon with Luis began with tacos and grew into a walk through the city’s history. Between stops, we took in landmarks such as Catedral Metropolitana, Palacio Nacional, and the Zócalo, ending at Templo Mayor.
Seeing the ancient ruins beside the colonial cathedral made Luis’s observations about Mexico’s contrasts come to life. A passing rain shower also led us into a cantina, adding an unplanned chapter to the afternoon.

Spend a Saturday in San Ángel
El Bazar del Sábado, at Plaza San Jacinto, is a showcase for Mexican design, folk art, and craftsmanship. It was one of the experiences our team was most excited to recommend to travelers.
Spend time browsing, ask about the pieces that catch your eye, and resist the urge to rush to the next stop.
Choose this for: Art, design, and shopping
A Chapultepec museum day
Museo Nacional de Antropología
Choose this for an introduction to Mexico’s ancient civilizations and archaeological heritage. Give it a meaningful portion of your day rather than a quick stop.
Museo Nacional de Historia
Choose this for history, historic interiors, and city views. Be sure to factor in the approach to the hilltop setting.
Museo Tamayo
Choose this for modern and contemporary art, with exhibitions that can shape what you see on a particular visit.
Museo de Arte Moderno
Choose this for modern Mexican art. It offers another perspective on the country’s artistic history within the Chapultepec setting.
05 | What to know before you go
Think by neighborhood. Traffic can take a larger bite out of the day than you expect. Group nearby experiences and keep dinner close to your evening plans whenever possible.
Prioritize your reservations. Choose the meals that matter most and arrange those first. Leave space for casual discoveries.
Dress for walking. Comfortable shoes help with longer outings and uneven sidewalks.
Keep plans flexible in the rainy season. Afternoon or evening showers can interrupt outdoor outings. Ask your hotel about borrowing an umbrella and keep a nearby indoor option in mind.
