The Event
The Serengeti Girls Run is an annual running event that brings together women from around the globe to run across the Serengeti plains while supporting vital empowerment programs for women and girls in Tanzania. This event is a collaboration between our partner, Singita, and the Grumeti Fund, and highlights the fundamentals of community and conservation, making it one of the most meaningful and picturesque runs in the world.
During the event, participants will run across the iconic Serengeti plains, safeguarded by Grumeti Fund Scouts, amidst stunning African landscapes and wildlife. The run includes a flexible, multi-stage distance of 21km (13 miles) per day. Participants can either run or support the runners from the shadow vehicle and will learn about the Grumeti Fund's work by meeting the local women and girls who benefit from the event. Each evening, guests can partake in guided game drives, offering an exclusive view of this 350,000-acre protected reserve, making it a trip that combines adventure with a meaningful purpose.
The Experience
From the moment you arrive, you will agree with us when we say that Singita is ALWAYS a home run. Singita, renowned for its exquisite lodges and impeccable service, ensures that every aspect of guests’ stay is meticulously planned and executed.
Each day of the run is carefully designed to challenge and inspire. The runners will explore diverse terrains, from open savannahs to acacia woodlands, with the opportunity to see the incredible wildlife that calls this region home. Running alongside giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests is a surreal experience that will make this event truly unforgettable. Along the way, the athletes will be supported by expert guides and a dedicated team, ensuring their safety and comfort.
Upon the completion of each day, participants retire to Singita’s stunning Sabora Tented Camp for relaxation and reflection. The camp boasts nine tented suites and features elements like a private meditation deck, views of the surrounding grasslands, a curated in-room pantry and dining space, and an outdoor sala with daybeds. Participants can gather around the campfire, sharing stories of the day’s adventures while savoring gourmet meals prepared by Singita’s talented chefs. The camaraderie and connections formed during these moments are uniquely intimate, as runners from around the world bond over shared experiences and a common purpose.
The event includes six nights at Singita Sabora Tented Camp, hosted by Singita and the Grumeti Fund, in addition to daily game drives and wilderness runs!
The impact
The Serengeti Girls Run is not just about the thrill of the race; it is about making a meaningful impact. Proceeds from the event go directly to the Grumeti Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the Serengeti ecosystem and the betterment of local communities. By participating in this event, runners are contributing to initiatives that support girls’ education, women’s empowerment, and community development.
Additionally, the Grumeti Fund’s conservation efforts work towards the preservation of the Serengeti’s unique biodiversity. From anti-poaching initiatives to habitat restoration projects, the contributions from this event aid in protecting this iconic landscape for future generations.
The following projects are directly funded by the run:
Scholarships for 80 local girls in secondary school, vocational studies, and university
Empowerment events for 5,000 high school girls
One year’s worth of sanitary pads for 5,000 high school girls so that they can attend school with dignity and pride
Training costs for health experts on menstrual and reproductive health during girls’ empowerment sessions
Accommodation & meal costs during internships
Mentorship programs
