Destination Guide: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is often overlooked in favor of its neighbor to the North, India. However, despite being a smaller country, what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in the variety of experiences and in the character of its people.

Why Sri Lanka?

From going on safari with the largest of the Asian elephants to tea tasting in the tranquil valleys, there is something for everyone in this hidden gem found in the Indian Ocean. But what will leave the biggest impact is the warmth of its people. Never have I met such a kind culture and I am excited to have you experience their country.

Getting There.

It is a trek to get to Sri Lanka given that it is located halfway around the world. So the journey is not for the faint of heart and a fair amount of time should be dedicated to the trip in exchange. You will most likely journey to Doha, Qatar, or Dubai first, where you will catch a connection to Colombo. A fun addition to the trip would be to spend a few days in those cities getting over jet lag and then continuing on to Sri Lanka.

Where to Stay.

Tea Trails is probably the most iconic hotel in Sri Lanka and part of Resplendent Ceylon’s trifecta of gorgeous Relais & Chateau properties. It is 5 colonial cabins set across an active tea plantation. The decor pays tribute to its heritage, so you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time as you pass through. Each cabin has its own staff including a chef. Who, despite our unusual requests, still manage to always leave us completely stuffed! There is a variety of activities to take part in on the property so you’ll never grow bored, when the sun gets to be too much in the afternoon you can retreat to the tranquility of your cabin, each of which is equipped with its own pool.

The second property, Wild Coast, is also a Resplendent Ceylon property set on the southern coast near Yala National Park. I would qualify these experiences as “glamping” but that would do it an injustice. These rooms were the most beautiful tents I’ve ever slept in. Each came with a private pool, claw foot tub, and a cozy decor that may be the cause of some of the best night sleeps I’ve ever had. In between your Safari experiences, you can indulge in their spa treatments, take a cooking class to learn how to utilize the multitude of spices that are grown in Sri Lanka, or simply relax by the pool.

Finally, the Amangalla located in the town of Galle was one of the most beautifully restored historic hotels I’ve ever seen. For 100 years it was known as the New Oriental Hotel. Aman has done a beautiful job restoring it to its prime while still paying homage to its origins. This 5-star sanctuary is set in the colonial fort of Galle and is definitely a must!

maria’s Favorite Things.

Going on safari in Sri Lanka is quite different from the safaris in Africa. It still has a bit more authenticity behind it but what it lacks in refinement it makes up for in the range of wildlife. Sri Lanka has the largest species of Asian elephants, Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards where you can also find the elusive sloth bear, and it is a bird watchers paradise with a large array of rare species.

I also recommend a visit to a cinnamon plantation. In the States what we think of as cinnamon is actually cassia, which is much spicier than true cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon, grown in Sri Lanka, has a more velvety texture and is known for its health benefits. When you visit the plantation you have a much better appreciation for the effort that goes into making one single coil of cinnamon. I was also impressed by the sustainability of their practices, not one piece of the tree goes unused. The leaves are used to make cinnamon oil and the inner portion of the bark is used as the firewood to do so. Afterward, you can enjoy lunch at the exquisite home of the plantation owners to hear all about their journey.

Not many people are aware of this but Princess Diana’s famous sapphire engagement ring that now graces the hand of Princess Catherine was a gift from Sri Lanka. The best sapphires in the world are found here amongst other precious gems such as garnet, and aquamarine. You can visit a gemologist to learn all about them. Afterward, feel free to shop around where you can create a custom piece to take home as a memento of your trip.

Can’t Miss.

Most of the properties were Relais and Chateau so there is no need to venture off property for meals nor is it reasonable to do so given the location.
